I was working in Stogursey and Goathurst and travelled between the two via Nether Stowey. After having a wander around the village I headed up Pinnacle Hill via the very elaborate church just to the N of the A39. This is an excellent spot for a pillar, the views really do stretch in all directions. The Welsh coastline was visible on this cloudy but clear day.

#14 'trig' of the trip. #8 Pillar. Parked at Banneson Road ST 19390 39663, Nether Stowey, crossed A39, then through Budley farm, followed footpath up to trig, there is a gate 100m or so before reaching trig you can climb over to get on correct side of hedgerow, however at the moment they are replacing the fence/hedging so we walked up the PROW until almost at the trig and then went into the field.

Cycled out from Street YHA via Bridgwater. Good concrete road up to Peadon Farm at ST203414. Left bike there but after passing through farmyard there was a gravelled lane all the way to the trig which I could have ridden. You need to enter the field by the gate before the final steep ascent as it is in the field edge and not reachable or in view from lane. Barely on OS sheet 182.

Parked in large car park off the main road to the SW. The marked footpath has been diverted to the west of the buildings, then as others discovered, you need to leave it and enter the field at the bottom of the last short climb, in order to find the trig as previously described. Views on the wrong side of the hedge are quite spectacular.

Parking on roadside grass verge near entrance to Budley Farm on A39. Mostly RoW, but need to stay on W side hedgerow. A nasty little narrow path hemmed in by sprawling brambly hedgerow one side and b/w stock fence on the other, sensible thing is to dispense with that and stay on field side of fencing. Pillar on large plinth, horizontal hair fracture on one corner extending part way round 2 sides. Original top cap in place, lightly indented lettering; rear sight hole open; BSM-style FB. Extensive views N, S & W; E obscured by hedgerow.

The pillar sits on an 18 inch plinth next to a field side ditch and hedge of a field grazed by cattle. The field has been designated as permissive access land. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S// 3255; the plinth stands on a concrete base that has a few surface chunks missing and foundations exposed by a couple of inches next to the ditch. The trig was reached from Nether Stowey by the footpaths out from Budley Farm and returning to Stowey Court Farm. There is FB 1619 benchmark on the side of the village garage; the church has a large prominent cut bench mark on a buttress of the tower and a more subtle lichen covered cut mark on a buttress of the porch. The pillar looks to the southwest over the village and to the Quantocks; clearing rain clouds to the north allowed a glimpse of the Glamorgan coast; the adjacent hedge prevents a view eastward but from the nearby summit of the hill the Mendip and Polden Hills came into view as well as the wooded hill of Cannington Park and the Hinkley Point Power Stations.
